Gnome packaging project launched

Gnome News: “This project will initially produce RPMs and Debian packages, though packaging for other systems is planned for
the future. Binary packages will allow more people to test beta releases and develop with an “unstable” platform.
Packages made from CVS will allow developers to easily port to the 2.0 API without having to compile the entire
development platform themselves.”

Chinese government perplexed by Internet cafes

in China over the burgeoning Intenet cafe industry. Up to 15% of children in large cities such as Beijing,
Shanghai and Guangzhou are now said to be using the cafes. The government appears to be worried, and is
overseeing the installation of ‘information purifiers.'”

In the UK census it was not a crime to submit false information about ones religious beliefs (because of the controversy over privacy) so I submitted “Opensource” as my own religion, see census.

ICANN sneaks in reserved names for existing TLDs

Slashdotters are talking: “In the ongoing and contentious debate over new Top Level Domains, one
flamewar-provoking issue has been whether certain names ought to be reserved as second (or higher)
level domains within new TLDs because there’s something inherently (or at least potentially) abusive
to their use. Entrenched interests of all sorts have proposed everything from famous trademarks to
city, state, province, and country names to generic drug names for such exclusion, while people
favoring a more free and open Internet have opposed all such exclusions in favor of the traditional First Come, First
Served system.”
