Debian Linux: samba symlink attack

Author: JT Smith

Ferom net-security.org: Marcus Meissner discovered that samba was not creating temporary files safely in two places:

When a remote user queried a printer queue samba would creates a temporary file in which the queue
data would be written. This was doing using a predictable filename and insecurely, allowing a local
attacker to trick samba into overwriting arbitrary files.
smbclient “more” and “mput” commands also creates temporary files in /tmp insecurely.
Both problems have been fixed in version 2.0.7-3.2. and we recommand that you upgrade your samba
package immediately. More posted at LWN.net.

Released: The next game developers portal

Author: JT Smith

Anonymous Reader writes: “There is a new game developer portal now available for both open-source and commercial online games. Pixel Entertainment Network went live in Feburary, but has now just started picking up speed by presenting a series of forums for everyone to discuss on topics ranging from just starting to develop a game to the legal sides and marketing techniques for presenting the game (or games).
Although the site is a bit new, there is nearly something new everyday and looks like it has alot of potential, especially as a home for new game developers to express their ideas. This is a great place for new developers to talk with veterans as well as for game players to get some inside hints for some of the games they play today! There are even some links for those looking for additional outside help if this site does not yet offer it.

The site can be found at either http://stormbringer.sysconn.com or http://pcxl.n3.net.”

The resurrection and the light

Author: JT Smith

That’s LinuxPlanet’s incorrect Bible quote, not ours. “It’s entirely unplanned but a kind of neat coincidence that it’s Easter week and here I am talking about an operating system back from the dead and
what Linux can learn from it.

The operating system is IBM’s perennially crippled OS/2. It’s back in the form of a very good system with a very bad name: eCommerceStation. I
have a beta here, and it works very well. It’s an updated OS/2 Warp4 with lots of good applications, some very interesting network-centric stuff,
and the letters “eCS” everyplace older versions had “OS/2.” It’s published not by IBM but by a company called Serenity Systems.”
