A column at osOpinion gives Apple 10 bits of advice, including this: “Apple should continue to support the good work at Open Packages, duplicate the FreeBSD Ports system for Mac OS X and build a
beautiful, usable front-end on top of it all. A unified packaging system is a strong strategic advantage for the BSDs. For extra credit here,
Apple could interface the head of the Ports system directly into iDisk.”

Lineo, Trolltech expand embedded Linux partnership

PR Newswire has this item: Lineo Inc. and Trolltech AS today announced the expansion of the
companies’ current partnership to provide a comprehensive embedded Linux
solution.
The terms of the new agreement involve a new degree of cooperation between
these two embedded Linux companies. Trolltech will ensure that its Qt/Embedded
application framework integrates seamlessly into Lineo’s Embedix software
development kit. In return, Lineo will resell and provide professional
services for Qt/Embedded.

Warner Brothers: Someone stole our email

MSNBC: “Someone has broken into Warner Brothers Online computer system and sent spam to the company’s newsletter subscribers. The company sent out an apology email Friday, admitting “someone gained unauthorised access to our computer system” and, as a result, “many subscribers” received emails offering a pyramid-type investment scheme. The company would not comment on whether other information might have been taken.”

Microsoft lures big names for embedded OS

“Microsoft has lined up high-profile partners for an upcoming version of its Windows software designed to be stuffed into all sorts of nontraditional computing gadgets. The Redmond, Wash., software giant is developing the operating system, called Windows XP Embedded, in partnership with Bally’s video casino-game organization, Fujitsu-Siemens’ set-top box group and Siemens’ factory robot group, said Kim Akers, director of Microsoft’s embedded and appliance group.” Full story at CNET News.com.

Windows XP won’t support USB 2.0

CNET News.com reports that Microsoft will not support USB 2.0 in its Windows XP operating system, choosing Apple’s IEEE 1394 protocol instead. In a written statement, a Microsoft press representative said “Microsoft will not ship support for a standard that they can’t guarantee a great user experience on.”

PocketLinux pulls the plug on Helio support

All Linux Devices reports: “PocketLinux has come to the conclusion the Helio isn’t maturing fast enough to warrant active support.
