The Senate Banking Committee agrees: the current law in place to limit PC exports should be repealed because it relies on obsolete formulas to determine a computer’s power. The move to scrap the bill has wide support from key senators and the Bush administration, and is expected to pass. In an effort to compete with Sun Microsystems, Fujitsu today released a new mid-range server. The PrimePower 800 features a faster Sparc processor, one terabyte of disk space, and runs Solaris. No price was announced. Story at info World.

CNet reports: “Two digital certificates have been mistakenly issued in Microsoft’s name that could
be used by virus writers to fool people into running harmful programs, the software giant
warned Thursday.

According to Microsoft, someone posing as a Microsoft employee tricked VeriSign, which hands
out so-called digital signatures, into issuing the two certificates in the software giant’s name on
Jan. 30 and Jan. 31.

Such certificates are critical for businesses and consumers who download patches, updates and
other pieces of software from the Internet, because they verify that the software is being supplied from a particular company, such as Microsoft.”

Kir Kolyshkin writes “ASPSeek team has just released new versions of ASPSeek search engine software, which is available under GNU GPL. While 1.0.5 is a stable one and intended for usage in production environment, 1.1.1 devel adds some nifty features like UNICODE support, driver for Oracle 8i, smart results cache and support for external document format converters.ASPSeek is a search engine capable of indexing/searching within a few million URLs, and it has all the features that are expected from modern search engine, like advanced ranking, smart reindexing, phrase and boolean search, results templates, excerpts and query words highlighting etc.”

The Register reports: “Phil Zimmermann – creator of the OpenPGP encryption software – is playing down a flaw discovered in his hugely popular program, saying that someone would still need access to your hard drive to break the code.”
