MS bug of the day: upgrading to Windows 2000

Author: JT Smith

MSNBC.com tells us: “Upgrading from Windows 98 to 2000 may be responsible for
this error: “An error occurred while trying to create the file”.
According to Microsoft, when a user selects Create New
Document, and then tries to save it in the Insert Hyperlink
dialog box of any Office 2000 program, the error is generated.”

The hacker ethic: all work and all play?

Author: JT Smith

Businessweek.com: “Torvalds represents the epitome of the hacker ethos, as described in 1984
in Steven Levy’s Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution. Torvalds is
extremely passionate about his work — writing software — and believes in its
intrinsic value. He’s more motivated by the idea of creating something socially
valuable than the goal of making money. And he encourages other programmers to
share their work and build from the pooled ideas — as he continues to do in the
development of Linux.”

Vote4.com models itself after AmIGeekorNot.com

Author: JT Smith

Enders writes “The Vote4.com’s slogan should read “AmIGeekOrNot.com was first, we just made it better.”

Vote4.com went officially online March 6th, to mixed reviews. While the content is still thin compared to all the other Hot Or Not sites, http://www.Vote4.com offers many more advanced features.

Some of those features are:

Multiple Categories to vote on. i.e. Women, Men, tattoos, cars, Legs….

The Ability for members to create their Own booths… i.e. Want to see people vote on 3 legged dog pictures? THEN JUST CREATE IT!

Members can Manage all of their photos across multiple categories. Allowing them to deactivate, and activate and delete them.

And many more features.

The one feature that will let Vote4.com expand more than the others is, the ability for users to create their own “Voting Booths.” This means, if you want to see people submitting and voting on pictures of Cheddar Cheese, then you just create it. Vote4.com’s administrators will approve it, and it will be online with in 1 day.

Vote4.com has a lot of potential, and it’s nice to see that some web sites are actually letting the USERS decided what’s on the site, rather then deciding what the USER gets.

Getting Linux onto the corporate network

Author: JT Smith

Kelly McNeill writes: “When a problem crops up and no solution is offered, one tactic — though dangerous if your boss doesn’t like unauthorized servers — is to go ahead and use Linux to solve it. Recently, I started preliminary work on the project of “upgrading” all our old Windows boxes (200-odd machines running 3.1 and various Win9x flavors) to Windows 2000. As an intellectual exercise, I asked myself, “Could we dump Windows altogether and move straight over to Linux?” which led to another question: “How does one introduce Linux into a Microsoft-dominated network?” The story’s at OS Opinion.
