A column at LinuxWorld argues just that. “If Linux companies refocused their efforts away from maintaining multiple base distributions, they
could concentrate on the kind of added value that would crack the Linux market open.”

Bloomberg (on CNEt) says Chinese customers are having a hard time learning to use Linux. “Chinese-made computers from Legend Holdings and
Great Wall Computer use one of two competing operating systems: Microsoft’s Windows or a local
version of Linux — named Red Flag Linux to stir national pride–written by a company controlled
by President Jiang Zemin’s son, Jiang Mianheng.

So far, computers with the Windows software installed are selling briskly, even though they are 80
percent more expensive … “

BSD Today has the article. “HylaFAX is a software package which allows the sending and receiving facsimiles, polled retrieval of facsimiles,
shared data usage of a modem, and the sending of alpha-numeric pages. Outgoing faxes can be in any format and
they are automatically converted to a form suitable for transmission. Incoming faxes are stored as TIFF files and
can be automatically delivered by mail or printed.”

At LWB.net: “There is a buffer overflow in /bin/mail which allows a local
attacker to read, modify and delete mails of other users on the
system.”

LinuxPower.org has an interview with Gaël Duval, creator
of Linux Mandrake and vice president at Mandrakesoft. Duval says, “Linux-Mandrake has shipped GNOME since the first release if I remember well, and it’s
improved incredibly in the last year. There are many GNOME killer-applications and the latest
versions of GNOME are very well finished and stable. So there is no reason anymore for
Mandrakesoft not to try pushing GNOME as much as KDE because both desktops are true
alternatives to Windows and MacOS graphical environments. I think GNOME will continue to
become better and better and that’s very good news for Linux! That’s the reason why we will
push GNOME along with KDE to our users.”

LWN.net has the information. The version includes Radeon build without 8bit ; a fix of oops in scc driver; additon of __setup for ISAPnP, update docs; an updated E820 table sanitizer.

LWN.net has the announcement. “GTK+ is a toolkit for creating graphical user interfaces. A large
number of general purpose widgets are included and new types of widgets
can easily be created; many more are available in add-on libraries.”

TechWeb.com has this story: “IBM is looking for a few good Linux solution
providers-and it’s willing to pay to get them started.

At the PartnerWorld conference this week in Atlanta, IBM
Corp. (stock: IBM) said it expanded its Linux-focused
You Pass, We Pay program. Under the program, IBM will
reimburse business partners for up to $3,000 in tuition and
test expenses for each employee who gets certified via the
Linux Professional Institute or Red Hat Linux.”

The Associated Press reports on a project commissioned by the Brazilian government, called Volkscomputer, which runs on Linux.
