BBC.com reports that several music companies are laughing at Napster’s proposed $1 billion settlement.
“We are disappointed that Napster has resorted to a tactic which is
little more than a public relations gambit,” said the recording
industry’s representative body IFPI.

ASPSeek 1.0.3 search engine software source released

Kir Kolyshkin writes: “SWsoft has just released new version of ASPSeek search engine software. ASPSeek is a search engine software developed by SWsoft and licensed under GNU GPL. This basically means that it is free, open-sourced software, and everyone could participate in development.
ASPSeek is optimized for multiple sites and medium loads, and can be used to search within several million pages (URLs). User can search
for words and phrases, use wildcards, and do a Boolean search. Search results can be limited to time period given, site or Web space (set of sites) and sorted by relevance or by date.
This release adds some features and fixes some bugs found (see changes for details).”

Linux-based server can distribute 100,000 emails an hour

Hokkaido Ltd. exhibited a Linux-based server, Flashoot-Mail, recnetly. The server can handle
100,000 mail sends per hour. They
will begin shipping the server in
March 2001.
