Fresno III: Commercial medical model has failed

Saint writes: “LinuxMedNews has the press release for an International meeting held to discuss free and open source medical software called Fresno III. Some of the highlights of the meeting where as follows:

  • Agreement reached that commercial model of software development in family medicine/general practice has failed.
  • Continued collaboration and partnership is advantageous.
  • A model for patient involvement with the EHR was agreed.
  • A framework for further international collaboration has been achieved, although funding sources remain to be secured.
  • Specific aspects of primary care computerization needs are better met in the UK than the USA and vice versa, though neither fully reflects the concepts identified in GEHR (Good Electronic Health Record)”

Microsoft partners to take on Unix in the data center

From Infoworld: “Calling the demise of Unix in the data center a “when, not if” scenario, Pete
Samson, vice president and general manager of technological development at
Unisys, said Microsoft and Avanade — a new company created by
Accenture, formally Anderson Consulting — have been working on Windows
data center technology for almost a year. The products, scheduled to begin
appearing by year’s end, will run on the Unisys ES-7000, the only server
currently available that can run Windows on 32-way Intel-based architecture.”

SuSE laying off staff? “Totally rubbish,” says US spokesperson

Linux Today reported that a SuSE spokesperson had discounted all rumors that the German Linux company would layoff workers as “totally rubbish.” Linux Today later confirmed that “some employees are being moved to a different office.” This certainly doesn’t confirm that SuSE will dispose of any employees, but the relocation explanation has been used by several companies recently when reducing staff.

LinuxPPC to bundle Open Motif with standard distribution

In fact, LinuxPPC will become the first major Linux distribution to bundle Open Motif with their standard distribution. It says so at this press release posted to LinuxPR: “With this announcement, LinuxPPC becomes the first major Linux publisher to include Open Motif with it standard distribution.” Also noteworthy: “The port of this
toolkit to LinuxPPC was the result of a joint development effort by LinuxPPC and ICS.”

Win2000 Server sales poised to pass 1 million

ZDNet reports that Microsoft has released actual sales figures for its Windows 2000 Server products. — over one million sold since introudction. The Redmond software giant doesn’t usually disclose such information, but made an exception for its recent media campaign which just happened to debut with the start of last week’s LinuxWorld Expo.
