ZDNET says: “It seems that hackers take it personally when someone intrudes on
their territory.

Two days after it released an advisory warning of several holes in a
key piece of Internet software, Network Associates Inc. was the
target of a DoS (denial of service) attack Wednesday night.”

ZDNET reports: “Just as IBM did yesterday, Intel Corp. is enlisting the
help of open-source developers in pushing Linux and open source to
the limits.

During a Thursday morning keynote speech here at the LinuxWorld
Conference and Expo, William Swope, vice president of Intel’s
Architecture Group, will talk up the role of enterprise servers in
furthering the growth and potential of open source.”

NetSecurity.org: “Previous versions of XEmacs had a problem with the
gnuserv application. Versions prior to 21.1.14 could
allow arbitrary code to be executed by overrunning the
magic cookie buffer, as well as accepting the prefix of
valid magic cookies (i.e. “12” is accepted if the cookie
is “12345678”).”

From ZDNET: “The open-source Apache software continues to be the most popular server software for sending
out Web pages, but Microsoft’s competing product dominates in the high-end financial
transaction part of that market, an ongoing Web server study from U.K. research firm Netcraft
shows.”

Slashdotters talk about Linux World expo stuff.

Chastened Linux executives pledged to stop their “crazy dreaming” and
disband their efforts Wednesday after an executive from Microsoft proclaimed Linux was doomed, and openly
questioned whether the free, rival operating system should exist, reports SatireWire.

From an announcement at LWN: “WhizzBee is a next-generation web server that leverages the state-of-art
clustering technology. It is developed on top of the open-source Apache
web server with a number of performance enhancement features. The current
version, WhizzBee 1.0a, works for the Linux OS on i386 platforms.”

squeezed the little guys out! That’s the news!’

Well, not only is that not news, folks, but it isn’t even true. Not
from our impressions of the show floor, and we’ve been to the
last four Stateside Expos. Of them all, this one has the
healthiest balance between the come-latelys — the IBMs, Dells
and SGIs — and pure play newcomers.”

After reading the article I’m not sure which is more heretical: the Bitch About Your Boss folks silencing dissent on their own boards, cracking and DNS-redirecting Bitchvault to their most flattering press release, or leaving logs behind that made prosecution a no-brainer.

Too bad for Vault that being ‘3L1T3 H4CK3RZ’ won’t get you funding these days.”
