plans to become a non-profit organization (NPO). The NPO will focus on
the development and promotion of the Linux operating system on the PowerPC
processor. It will also be better able to support the growth and
development of the operating system.
Like many other free software projects, the LinuxPPC operating system was
largely built by volunteers. Non-profit organizations are designed to
organize such efforts, rather than have a for-profit corporation
controlling it.”

ZDNet asks whether Netscape still has the horses to compete with Micrsoft. ” … You have to wonder whether Netscape still has the horses to make a go of it — let
alone come up with the sort of ‘wow’ technology that might have helped it slice into
Microsoft’s lead in the browser market.
The best talent — which once made Netscape the hottest place to work in Silicon
Valley — has long since departed for greener pastures.”

ZDNET: “…open source code offers taxpayers the opportunity to see if they are getting their tax
dollar’s worth, since shoddy workmanship can be exposed by watchdog groups. Vendors afraid
of having their work publicly accessible would shy away from government projects, lessening
opportunities for patronage and graft. On the flip side, companies whose work does shine when
exposed to the light would be able to enhance their reputations. There would be less opportunity
for smoke and mirrors in publicly funded IT.”

OSOpinion has published a long complaint about the media’s confusion over tech/geek issues and culture. The author infers that the only smart people are programmers and other tech people.

Wired.com reports that Google “acknowledged that the Bush store doesn’t seem to be a ‘legitimate search result,’ but rejected the suggestion that it was the work of
a renegade Google staffer who had rigged the engine to return this result.”

CNET listened in on an interview with Scott McNealy. He likens standalone computing to stashing cash under the mattress, and networked systems to putting money in the bank. The interview will be aired on PBS’ “CEO Exchange.”
