Specifications
Univention Corporate Server (UCS) is a reliable, pre-configured Linux server operating system featuring: - Active Directory-like domain services compatible with Microsoft Active Directory - A mature and easy-to-use web-based management system for user, rights and infrastructure management; a scalable underlying concept suited for single server scenarios as well as to run and manage thousands of clients and servers for thousands of users within one single UCS domain - An app center providing single-click installation and integration of many business applications from 3rd parties and Univention - Management capabilities to manage Linux- and UNIX-based clients - Command line, scripting interfaces and APIs for automatization and extension Thus, UCS is the best fit to provide Microsoft Server-like services on the cloud or on the premises, to run and operate corporate IT environments with Windows- and Linux-based clients and to extend those environments with proven enterprise software, also either on the cloud or on the premises. Since UCS 4.0, UCS also manages OpenStack- and Amazon EC2-based cloud resources. The complete source code of Univention Corporate Server is provided under an Open Source licence. The software is tried-and-tested and regularly updated. For private users, UCS is free of charge with infinite use for up to 50 users and clients. Support is provided via the Univention forum. Commercial users can obtain UCS at reasonable prices and have guaranteed, individually adjustable support. Further information: UCS features user, group and rights administration, an integrated IP management (DNS, WINS, DHCP), file and printer services. UCS is ideal for positioning services or applications on the cloud. It allows the simple, secure integration of cloud-based applications with established administration procedures. The included tool Univention AD Takeover allows the simple migration of a Microsoft Active Directory to UCS via the integration of Samba 4. The module Active Directory Connection, in turn, allows the mounting of a UCS domain in an existing AD domain, e.g., for using UCS as a platform for applications from the Univention App Center. This App Center provides, besides further UCS components such as Univention Corporate Client (UCC), which is a centrally managed client operating system, numerous Open Source products from third-party manufacturers, such as the groupware solutions Zarafa and Open-Xchange, the backup solution "SEP sesam", the document management system agorum®core, the customer management solution "SugarCRM" and the dropbox alternative "owncloud". All the software available in the Univention App Center is seamlessly integrated in UCS and can be easily installed and uninstalled with a few mouse clicks.

UCS ist great. WIthout much Linux know how, its my "royal road” to setup an Linux-based AD-Domain-Controller out-of-the-box with most of actually supported features. It is very easy to setup, it is free for personal use , it additionally gives the benefit of a full-featured-Linux-small-business-server including identity-management, virtualization, monitoring, mailserver, groupware and it is tested/distributed with enterprise-samba-4-support since 2012. And the best: this server-appliance also provides an ad-to-samba4-migration-tool „univention-takeover“. It even easy to install about its graphical app center.
