Public sector steps in to enable broadband Internet

linusrees writes “The Guardian newspaper (UK) reports: “In parts of the United Kingdom where telecom firms are failing to lay networks, local authorities are filling the gap. When Durham county council’s new high speed network, Durhamnet, is officially launched this spring, it will connect small businesses and homes as well as schools, libraries and council offices. A quarter of local authorities intend to allow local companies to use their broadband networks. Nearly 40 percent are opening the networks to voluntary organisations.””
