Telstra goes Open Source ….bigtime

Anonymous Reader writes “Telstra is by far the largest telco in Australia. It has 45,000 employees and a significant market share. It appears Telstra will keep only about 6,000 employees on Windows/Office. Whilst Telstra will build a two tier web services on.NET and J2EE the big news is the likely widespread deployment of thin client technology using SunOne for the majority of employees. Telstra plans to halve the current IT budget of $A1.5billion. In recent trials Telstra have had a pilot of 250 staff using linux, StarOffice, Gnome, Mozilla and a “Ximian mail browser” (presumably Evolution).

We live in interesting times.”
