Steve Roylance writes "New York, 31st August 2004. Comodo-Trustix, developers of the world's most secure Linux distribution, announce the release of their consolidated web host package, consisting of a fully supported distribution of Trustix Operating System ES pre-configured with the server management tool, cPanel.
The web hosting platform is moving inexorably towards the open source LAMP (Linux Apache mySQL PHP) standards, with Apache based web servers currently dominating the market by 4:1. The extra security and stability afforded to websites running on LAMP based technology is now being complemented by a new generation of powerful and user friendly control panels. Solutions such as cPanel facilitate the management of web host accounts, mailboxes, domains and the implementation and deployment of e-commerce technologies such as shopping carts.
Web hosting companies are likely to be the largest beneficiaries of the new offering, which bundles their hardened, server optimized Linux distribution, Trustix OS to the web hosting control panel system, cPanel. For a combined monthly fee of $49.95 (external license) or $29.95 (internal license), hosting companies can take advantage of cPanel/WHM's powerful host and end user account management features whilst running their servers on a fully supported and pre-secured server operating system.
Whilst this presents immediate cost and support benefits to an organization over, respectively, a separately licensed distribution of Linux and a 'free' distribution, it also enables web hosts to streamline a large part of their organizational structure.
The unification of the control panel and the OS into a single vendor entity means web hosts will enjoy cleaner and, crucially, more effective support. Instead of making several, overlapping 'phone calls to multiple organizations, customers will be able to identify and solve any problems with a single call to Trustix. Trustix was recently described as being 'astonishing fast' at developing and disseminating patches for its operating system.
Steve Roylance, Technical Marketing Director Comodo-Trustix, commented,
"The open source model exemplified by the LAMP standard has created a market that is more agile and responsive to customer needs than was evident in the 90's. Comodo-Trustix is playing a huge part in this power shift. The introduction of our consolidated web host package is commensurate with the prevailing market conditions and illustrates our commitment to creating innovative and cost effective solutions for the whole range of e-commerce interests."
