Installing XFree86 4.0.1 on Debian 2.2 (Potato)

Author: JT Smith

DebianPlanet has a how-to article: “I really wanted to install XFree86 4.0.1 on my Debian machine at work. The problem was that there were packages for Debian 2.3 only – which is
unstable – and I am running stable distribution. So the option to upgrade to Debian 2.3 was out of the question. Then I learned that there are
XFree86 4.0.1 (from now on XF4) packages for Debian 2.2 available (someone on IRC pointed it out to me on #debian; IRC is pretty cool ;).
These packages are unofficial but were compiled using the XF4.0.1 phase-2 source packages for XF4 in unstable distribution as built by Charl P.
Botha, which are good enough for me.”

Pentium 4 Linux problem all Intel’s fault?

Author: JT Smith

From The Register: “Intel seems to be largely to blame for the fact that many Linux distributions won’t
install on the Pentium 4. According to the latest Linux 2.2.18 kernel notes,
Chipzilla’s big mistake was to break the usual pattern in CPUID model numbering
without telling people – or at least without telling them loudly enough.”

Opinion: When good code goes goofy

Author: JT Smith

LinuxPlanet has a column about XFree86: “Can we agree that XFree86 has become a mess?

If you don’t, download the current CVS tree and try to make some sense of it. Or, if your connection is such that you really
can’t spare a couple of days to get it, download the source for XFree86-4.01 and take a look. For an extra-special good
time, try building it with direct rendering (DRI) support and a kernel module for your 3-D video card. See what I mean?

Ah, you probably thought that the docs would help you. Lots of luck. The INSTALL.TXT in the top-level directory of the
source was last updated just under three years ago.”
