The future of the GIMP

Author: JT Smith

Our friends at the LinuxNews Team submitted this story: “Sven Neumann and Michael Natterer prepared an RFC about GIMP. We can learn that
there will be three branches in CVS – 1.2.x branch (stable GIMP), 1.3.x ( devel GIMP but
not many new features) and 1.9.x (VERY devel GIMP with whole new structure, GEGL and
GCim stuff). Looks like GIMP 1.2.0 is on it’s way to the users 🙂
Check out the RFC!”

Lanier: UNIX embarrassingly primitive

Author: JT Smith

Upside Today’s Sam Williams interviews Jaron Lanier: “How I hated Unix back in the ’70s — that devilish
accumulator of data trash, obscurer of function, enemy of
the user,” he writes. “If anyone had told me back then
that getting back to embarrassingly primitive Unix would
be the great hope and investment obsession of the year
2000, merely because its name was changed to Linux
and its source code was opened up again, I never would
have had the stomach or the heart to continue in
computer science.”

Olinux.br interviews Robin “roblimo” Miller

Author: JT Smith

Newsforge reader Fernando Correa contributed this story: “My official title is Editor in Chief for the Open Source
Development Network,
owner of Slashdot.org, freshmeat.net, sourceforge.net, linux.com, and a
number
of other sites. You probably know me best as ‘Roblimo’ on Slashdot. I
tend to
prefer the title ‘Editor and Rabblerouser.’ Perhaps I’ll have that
printed on my
next batch of business cards. People who know me personally understand
that
this is a better description of what I do than a traditional,
fancy-sounding
corporate title.”

SiS 730S socket-a chipset: Is the Duron allowed to succeed now?

Author: JT Smith

From Anandtech: “The benchmarks all agree that the Duron is by far the best value processor on the market. Yet the Duron’s sales couldn’t be lower. SiS has a solution to this problem as they attempt to provide the Duron with a home through their 730S chipset. Does the 730S have what it takes to help the Duron compete with the Celeron? Or will the chipset end up hurting the Duron in the long run? We answer these questions and more in our in-depth analysis of the SiS 730S Chipset.”
