Eucalyptus CEO Marten Mickos Cozies Up to OpenStack

All the way back in 2008, before it was a commercial product, OStatic broke the news about an open source project at U.C. Santa Barbara called Eucalyptus, which we described as “for implementing ‘cloud computing’ on clusters.” Of course, fast-forward to today, and Eucalyptus Systems is one of the most discussed companies on the cloud computing scene.

When it comes to cloud computing and open source, though, OpenStack tends to grab the most headlines. That’s why it’s interesting that Eucalyptus Systems CEO Marten Mickos is keynoting at the upcoming OpenStack Silicon Valley conference, and he has put up a blog post saying that he wants to be a contributor to OpenStack.

Scholarships Help Increase Access to Linux Education

keep-calm-and-learn-linux copy 2What does a file system engineer living in Minnesota have in common with a woman from Uganda working on maintaining Linux systems and a research and computing scientist working at a medical university? They were among the five Linux Training Scholarship winners in 2013.

Now in its fourth year, the Linux training scholarships from The Linux Foundation have become highly-sought honors by many of the most talented up-and-coming Linux pro’s in the world. With nearly 700 submissions received last year we’re very excited to review this year’s applicants in September (the submission deadline is Sept 2).

The Linux Training Scholarship Program is one of the ways we’re working to increase access to Linux education. This program is designed to provide funds to developers, IT professionals and students who show interest and promise in building Linux careers, but who otherwise do not have the ability to attend Linux Foundation training courses.

Additionally, we announced new training partners earlier this year who are helping make Linux Foundation training materials available to more people in more areas around the world. And, in March we introduced the first-ever Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) Intro to Linux with edX, which began August 1. With more than 230,000 people signed up to take the course, we know more than ever that there is a strong demand to learn Linux.

Not only do young people and mid-career professionals alike know the value of Linux knowledge, but employers are seeking it out. Our 2014 Linux Jobs Report showed that 93 percent of managers surveyed planned to make Linux hires this year. But 90 percent also reported finding that talent is difficult, which is a five-point increase since 2012. It’s getting more difficult to find qualified Linux pro’s.

We hope the programs we’ve put in place can help. Please share the Linux Training Scholarship details with your friends, families and colleagues and look for opportunities through the Linux Foundation and others to demonstrate your know-how.

LibreOffice is Coming to Android

I’ve been hoping to see this headline for some time now. At the first LibreOffice Conference, the Document Foundation announced its plans to migrate LibreOffice to mobile devices. The plan didn’t include a total rewrite of the code, but repurposing at least 90% of the current code base…

There is no set release date at this point. Until the developers get the file size below the Google limit, they are unable to predict a release. Until then, however, we’ll just have to sit back and wait — and hope this happens across the Google landscape. Even though LibreOffice would be in direct competition with Google Docs, it’s clear that there are some users who not only need native ODF support, but rely on a more traditional office suite to fulfill those needs.

Want a Fulfilling IT career? Learn Linux

How can understanding Linux enhance a career? This question is interesting because there are two drastically different answers. The first is the obvious answer that you can find through websites and studies everywhere, but the second is a little more subtle. And a lot more awesome.

Navigate Using Your Tizen Samsung Gear 2 / Neo with DMA Navi Watch

Being in a strange city whilst holding your £600 flagship Smartphone in your hands, tempting all unsavoury characters is probably not the best of ideas, and now you don’t have to. XDA Member drashko has created the DMA Navi Watch, a Samsung Gear 2 / Neo app that behaves as a navigation-enabled watch face. It also displays the time, date, weather and also further customisation features.

DMA Navi Watch uses Google Navigation notifications from your device and displays them to your wrist. To setup the app you need to enable the notification listener on your Android Smartphone and your good to go, video instructions on how to do this are below. When your not navigating anywhere, the clock face works like a standard Gear 2 clock face. The App is available now to download from Samsung Galaxy Apps (depending on country and network availability).
