CuBox-i Tiny PCs Run Linux and Android, Start at $45

Although the Raspberry Pi has grabbed the most headlines as a tiny, ultra-inexpensive, pocketable computer running an open source operating system, it’s actually only one of many tiny LInux computers being heralded as part of a new “Linux punk ethic.” We’ve written about a number of other miniscule computers that run Android and Linux here.

Now, there is a pretty cool looking $45 cube computer that runs Android and Linux, shown here, called the CuBox-i1. This thing looks like it could gain an audience.

Microsoft Plus Nokia: Pending Patent Troll? (InfoWorld)

Simon Phipps looks at Microsoft’s Nokia acquisition with an emphasis on Nokia’s patents. “By divesting its devices business yet retaining ownership of the patents that relate to them, Nokia has immunized itself from retaliatory action when it makes future patent offensives. In the past, a company such as Google — most likely Nokia’s primary target — could retaliate by attacking Nokia’s infringement of its own patents, but that line of defense is no longer available since all the products now belong to Microsoft. That’s the background to Nokia’s statement that it ‘plans to continue to build Nokia’s patent portfolio [and] to expand its industry-leading technology licensing program.’

CherryTree is a sweet solution that keeps my information local and cloud-free. CherryTree is an outliner-style hierarchical note-taking application that features rich text and syntax highlighting. It stores data in a single xml or sqlite file. I was a longtime user of Notecase Manager, which was discontinued in 2008 and later returned as a paid Pro application.

Samsung Takes on Android Malware with Bundled Enterprise Antivirus

Lookout already dominates the field of Android antivirus apps, but it’s expected to get a big boost this week when Samsung announces that it will be bundling the software as part of its Knox security suite for enterprise on all of its new Android phones. A report in the Wall Street Journal says that an official announcement is expected on Wednesday.

Lookout offers two tiers of service, a free antivirus app and a premium upgrade that provides cloud-based scanning of all email attachments, web browsing, and file sharing that happens on your phone. A Lookout press release confirms that it’s this higher tier of service that will be bundled with Knox.
