Qualcomm’s Take on Open Mobile Platforms

This week at LinuxCon, the Qualcomm Innovation Center (QuIC) joined The Linux Foundation at the platinum level. This represents Qualcomm’s strong commitment to Linux and to collaborative development. QuIC President Rob Chandhok, who keynoted at LinuxCon, also shared with us his ideas around mobile platforms and openness.


Can you tell us about Qualcomm’s take on the Mobile Linux marketplace?‚Ä®

Chandhok: Given the fragmented nature of the mobile OS world, Qualcomm believes the greatest critical mass and potential for significant developer leverage is mobile Linux. Unfortunately, mobile Linux mirrors the larger fragmentation we see in mobile operating systems. That fragmentation is largely driven by individual companies seeking competitive advantage via differentiation. These are legitimate business goals. However, we believe that these goals can be met while also establishing a common mobile Linux upstream baseline upon which differentiating capacities are built by individual players. In short, it is contrary to the interests of mobile developers for fragmentation to happen too low in the software stack. To the degree that this fragmentation is harming the business interests of mobile developers, it also is harming the interests of the rest of the players — OS distributions, technology providers, device makers, wireless operators and, ultimately, users.  Qualcomm is seeking to work with all the critical industry players to move towards the definition of a common baseline package.‚Ä®‚Ä®

The Qualcomm Innovation Center appears to be a good example of how companies can proactively ensure their products integrate with mobile open source projects. Can you tell us more about the Center and the importance of supporting upstream projects?

Chandhok: The Qualcomm Innovation Center, Inc. (QuIC) exists as an independent Qualcomm subsidiary to enable us to make upstream contributions to mobile open source efforts (not just those based on Linux, but also in the area of web technologies) such that open source High Level Operating Systems (HLOSes) and web technologies incorporate features that can enable the maximum optimal leverage of the advanced features and capabilities of Qualcomm chipsets. As such, it serves Qualcomm’s business strategies, obviously. But it also directly serves the interests of mobile developers, device makers, wireless operators and, it is important to always remember, end users. This is because a significant number of smartphone models from device makers around the world are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon™  family of chipsets. Since a very large fraction of these models are running an open source operating systems (OS), working to make sure those OSes have the hooks necessary to optimally leverage our chipsets helps developers (addressable market for premium apps), device makers (get the most out of our chipsets), operators (offering advanced devices and services) and end users (coolest and most useful devices and services). Let me add that many of the contributions we are making upstream are also useful additions to the overall code base generally — even if the actual commercial device is not based on a Qualcomm chipset.‚Ä®‚Ä®

You recently posted a job opening for a Linux kernel software engineer. How will this position help to advance collaboration between Qualcomm and the Linux development community?‚Ä®

Chandhok: The Linux kernel is the central key element of the common baseline package we would like to see emerge in mobile Linux. This engineer will help QuIC make important upstream contributions to the Linux kernel that, ideally, would be part of this common package. At a minimum, we expect this individual to help make valuable upstream kernel contributions that make it into the main distributions on offer today, or coming in subsequent years.



How important is a common set of tools for delivering consistent support for Linux-based products to your customers? What are you doing today to ensure you can achieve that?‚Ä®

Chandhok: Well, every developer would love to have only one set of really excellent tools, right? In that utopian construct, the simple answer to your questions is: Very Important. But a single common set of tools is not going to happen. We are happy to help tools developers improve their tools but, at the end of the day, the best place we can have an impact is by providing a common set of excellent tools specific to the particular features and capabilities of our chipset system software, tools which integrate well with the larger set of tools being provided to the developer and manufacturer communities. We have a long ways to go on our tools development efforts. I wish we were farther along. But we are getting there. I would point to the Adreno Profiler, which helps developers write for our GPU; the Snapdragon Mobile Developer Platform (MDP), which we announced at Uplinq 2010 at the end of June, and the Snapdragon MDP’s Trepn™ power profiling tool that helps developers optimize their app’s power-usage. And more tools are in the works.  ‚Ä®‚Ä®

Having been founded in 1985, Qualcomm has been around the block. What knowledge and experiences are you drawing on to advance the company in an environment now dominated by open platforms?‚Ä®

Chandhok: Let me start by saying quite simply: We really like the move to open platforms. The emergence of open mobile platforms is essentially an organic evolution towards standardization.  Standards, as nettlesome as defining them can be, are good things. Our primary differentiation is in our advanced chipset+system software designs. That is where we compete. Open platforms pose no issues for our business model. In fact, they are helping us by creating a larger set of cooperative relationships for us. Qualcomm working as a good partner with many companies across the mobile space, including those we also compete with, is a good thing — for us and for the industry. The direct answer to your question can be found in my previous answers, but let me sum it up:  We are drawing on our deep knowledge of all things mobile (a knowledge and expertise which I would argue is second to none) to bring optimal uniquely mobile capabilities to mobile open source. And, for mobile developers and our manufacturer customers, we tightly integrate and optimize open source OSes (all the leading OSes our customers are implementing, actually) with our chipsets, which themselves feature software that functions as a highly optimized system. The intent quite plainly is so HLOSes–and the apps that developers write to them–run best on Qualcomm chipset-based mobile devices.

Moglen Targets Patents, Compliance and Innovation as Key Challenges for Free Software

 

Free software has come a very long way, but there’s still some serious challenges yet to be met.

 

That was the overarching theme of Wednesday’s from Eben Moglen, Professor of Law and Legal History at Columbia University Law School and Director-Counsel and Chairman at the Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC), who delivered a powerful message on the state of free software to LinuxCon attendees.

Moglen told his audience that in many ways, some elements of free software had truly matured as a recognized part of the worlds of technology and business.

“We are past the point where we are trying to prove the worth of free software to the developers and to the businesses,” he said, emphasizing that much of the original goal of free software–to make freedom useful for people–has indeed been met.

At this time in history, Moglen is keenly interested not on the strengths of free software, but rather on the interface between free software and business interests. The intersection, as he describes it, “between the economy of ownership and the economy of sharing.”

It is here, at this touchpoint, that defense is needed. But not defending free software from business, as they are not mutually hostile and exclusive.

“We are not defending freedom against capitalism or business, but usually from greed,” Moglen said.

In the areas where these two economies overlap, there are three areas where Moglen believes the free software community has to be particularly vigilant.

The first trouble spot Moglen identified was that of patent law.

The patent crisis is not going to go away,” Moglen stressed. This summer’s Bilski ruling from the US Supreme Court confirmed as much for Moglen, who related to the audience that before the decision was handed down, he feared that the Court would hand down a ruling to the effect of: “You can’t patent this, and here are five incoherent reasons why… and that’s exactly what happened.”

Moglen is concerned that without clarity from the US regarding patents, there will be not international clarity, and patents will remain a constant threat.

“We going to have to deal with this slowly and carefully,” Moglen reiterated, using such patent defense organizations such as the Open Invention Network as one potent method of defense against patents.

It won’t be easy: “The patent system is built for secrecy, obscurity, complexity… and troublemaking.” Nonetheless, the challenge will remain for some time.

The second legal concern touched on compliance, which gave an opportunity to touch on The Linux Foundation’s announcement this week of its new Open Compliance Program, which, along with the SFLC’s efforts, are key programs to educating incoming free software developers and businesses about the rules of the road.

The problem is that the world of free software is not like it was during its origins, when it was technical people who brought free software to businesses (sometimes before the business was aware of it), and it was the engineers who were the early and outspoken advocates of free software.

No longer, Moglen explained. Now, with the maturity and attractiveness of free software firmly in place, engineers and businesses alike are coming to free software possibly uneducated about the legal aspects of free software. This situation, in turn, leads to potential compliance issues.

Efforts like the Open Compliance Program and the work done by the SFLC, Moglen added, need to keep trying to develop ways for businesses to join free software knowledgeably.

The final area of legal concern that Moglen highlighted in the keynote was imagination; specifically, the imagination lawyers and businessmen once brought to overlap free software and business to create some truly innovative ways to use free software.

Looking around his community, Moglen sees evidence that the legal community is showing signs of aging, or burn out, or even complacency. All of these things are potential dangers, because without fresh, new, disruptive ideas about the meeting of free software and business, the coexistence between the economy of ownership and the economy of sharing could fail.

“What we need are all out brains,” Moglen concluded. “There’s no free software side and no business side. We’re all in both businesses.”

Best Linux Kernel Feature: Btrfs takes the cake. Considering that the Btrfs session here at LinuxCon was one of the  most highly-attended sessions at the event, I can’t say I’m surprised. Also, the work that Chris Mason and the kernel team have done over the last year has significantly increased the performance of filesystems for Linux. Dynamic tracing was our runner up.

Favorite IT Operations Tools: Nagios wins this category with more than 1/2 the vote. Congratulations to this active community!

Favorite Browser for Linux: This was a slam dunk with Firefox receiving nearly 75% of the vote. Chrome comes in second but hard to dispute a winner like Firefox with that majority of the votes.

Favorite Open Source Project: Apache remains the community favorite. And who can blame us? Apache is one of the original open source innovations and helps to power the web we rely on today. OpenOffice took a very close second place with MySQL in third position.

Best Linux Success Story: This was our closest vote. The success that Linux continues to have in the enterprise, especially for a growing variety of workloads, makes it the winner. But, it wins over the market success of Android by only 12 votes.

Hall of shame: The Biggest Industry Disappointment: Linux users and developers just won’t let the Playstation debacle slide; it takes the top spot as biggest industry disappointment for the year. The Adobe v Apple standoff turned people off, for sure; but the Playstation controversy hit closer to home for the Linux.com community.

Chrome to Phone now available in Android Market

Chrome to Phone isn’t a new product — we’ve been using it since May, in fact –but Google’s second mobile announcement today (behind Voice Actions) is that its continuous client app is now “official” and available to all users (with Android 2.2 Froyo) via Android Market. As it was before, websites can be pushed from the Chrome browser to your Android device, with certain apps (Maps, YouTube) taking over for the browser when contextually appropriate. Useful? Yes, yes indeed.

Palm Enabling webOS Apps to Interact with Universal Search, Dock Mode?

When our own esteemed Paul Millercracked the mystery that allows the Motorola Droid to behave differently when docked than when in the hand, it took some of the magic out the behavior. However, that doesn’t diminish from its utility, and it’s a feature that could be coming to webOS. PreCentral.net received a screenshot from a developer highlighting two new options for webOS apps: Universal Search-enabled and Dock-enabled. The first surely means that apps can provide content based on Universal Search queries, and we’re going to go ahead and guess that the second enables an app to look and behave differently when docked. The question is: what’s the dock? Is it just the Touchstone, or are there more docks coming? Here’s to hoping.
