A system based on Debian

The idea of a Linux Mint desktop based on top of Debian Testing is quite seducing. It’s much faster than Ubuntu and the current Linux Mint desktops, it uses less resources, and it opens the door for a rolling distribution, with a continuous flow of updates and no jumps from one release to another. It’s something we’ve always been tempted to do. Needless to say, whether it’s been because of our lack of communication on that topic or not, this has been a source of numerous rumors within the community.

Opera 10.60 Final

Opera has launch the final version of his browser, the Opera 10.60. Some of the newest things inside the browser are:

  • The use of the WebM for video reproduction
  • The Geolocalization can help us to determinate what is best route to take, or what is the closed coffee shop in the area. The activation of this feature requires the user authorization
  • You can work off line with the Appcache
  • 50% faster than the previous version of Opera
  • Phishing supported by AVG

With the new WebM support Opera becomes one of the firsts browser to support this standard.

Eucalyptus Systems Raises $20 Million For Open-Source Private Cloud Software

Eucalyptus Systems, creator of an open source private cloud software, has raised $20 million in funding led by New Enterprise Associates, with participation from current investors Benchmark Capital and BV Capital. This brings total capital raised to date to $25.5 million.

Eucalyptus’s infrastructure software allows enterprises to deploy scalable private and hybrid cloud computing environments. The software itself also connects to the public cloud, including Amazon Web Services. The company is using the funding to scale development, marketing and sales its software.

MySQL’s CEO M√•rten Gustaf Mickos joined Eucalytpus in March shortly after joining Benchmark Capital as an Entrepreneur in Residence last fall.

Version 1.6 of the Mercurial distributed version control system has been released.
