Guido on the history of Python
Python creator Guido van Rossum has been writing a series on the history of the language; the latest installment is titled From List Comprehensions to Generator Expressions“. “Why the differences, and why the changes to a more restrictive list comprehension in Python 3? The factors affecting the design were backwards compatibility, avoiding ambiguity, the desire for equivalence, and evolution of the language. Originally, Python (before it even had a version 🙂 only had the explicit for-loop. There is no ambiguity here for the part that comes after ‘in’: it is always followed by a colon. Therefore, I figured that if you wanted to loop over a bunch of known values, you shouldn’t be bothered with having to put parentheses around them.“

Thin client supports dual displays
The U.K. firm Netvoyager announced a thin client that runs Linux and provides dual-display support, with both VGA and DVI outputs. The Neterm LX1032, as well as the similar Windows-based XP1032, offer Via C7 or Eden processors respectively, as well as 1GB of DDR2 RAM. 1GB of flash, a gigabit Ethernet port, four USB 2.0 ports, plus smart-card reader and Wi-Fi options, the company says….
How to Hack Your Nook (Firmware v 1.4) [Nook]

The nookDevs have updated their guide to gaining root access to your nook (and installing third party programs) so that it’s compatible with the latest firmware 1.4. I’ve yet to see any demos that make the hack much more than a novelty, but if I’m missing something brilliant (VLC clips refreshing on an E-Ink display?) then correct me in the comments.
Updates to RAM Disk Linux module: rxd 0.2
Well it has been some time and an update was overdue. Anyways thanks to the help of Günter Khyo the rxd device driver was update for kernels 2.6.28 and later. You can get additional information to this educational project at the rxd Sourceforge page. There also exists a project wiki and you can view the source code across all available versions (0.1.1 and 0.2) in the project’s CVS repository.
Apple, Dell luxury laptops: Once cool, now old
Luxury ultrathin laptops from Apple and Dell were once ultra-hip. Now they quietly age at Apple and Dell online stores.
Both the aluminum-clad Apple MacBook Air and Dell Adamo were introduced with the kind of fanfare rarely seen for laptops. Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the MacBook Air at Macworld in January 2008 as the piece de resistance of the conference. (See video below.) And, in a rare cameo appearance, Intel Chief Executive Paul Otellini took the stage with Jobs to underscore the significance of the Air.
Cisco Entering Tablet Market with Android-Based Device
Cisco today announced the Cius, an Android-based seven inch tablet computer aimed at the enterprise. The device will feature both front and rear facing cameras, Cisco TelePresence interoperable video conferencing and access to applications such as AnyConnect Security VPN Client, Cisco Quad and WebEx, as well as access to the Android app store. The launch further diversifies Cisco’s offerings.
