Apple OS X upgrade: reaction and rumours

The Register: “Mac OS X fans planning to besiege the stores this weekend to take advantage of
Apple’s free upgrade offer to version 10.1 are recommended to set off at a brisk
pace, and save buying the papers and Woodbines for the return journey.

We’re not sure how extensive the offer is, after enquiries on both sides of the pond.
We gather that Circuit City and CompUSA aren’t participating in the offer, although
PC World in the UK probably is.”

Windows XP for devices coming Nov. 28

CNET News.com: “Microsoft has set Nov. 28 as the release date for Windows XP Embedded, the next version
of the company’s software designed for devices such as slot machines, cash registers and
set-top boxes.

The company will release the product at its Windows Embedded Developers Conference in Las
Vegas, said Kelly Meagher, a product manager for Microsoft’s Embedded Platform Group.”

Judge lets .biz take first step online

charge it is running an illegal lottery proved inconclusive Wednesday. A judge declined to block
the first batch of domain names set to go live Oct. 1 and said he wanted more information before
deciding whether to block the second batch.”

VeriSign poised to win Net ID struggle

leading provider of online identification services. Known as e-wallets, such services allow
consumers to store their personal data in one place, eliminating the need to re-enter credit card
numbers, shipping address and other information as they travel from one Web site to another.

While it’s unclear who the victor will be–or even what the spoils are–VeriSign stands to gain
from the battle itself.”

Palm gets in synch with Linux

software that works with Palm OS devices such as those made by Handspring, Sony,
Palm itself and others. The software is one of the few applications available for connecting
handheld computers with the open-source operating system.”
