Linux becomes a contender vs. Unix

Author: JT Smith

Reported at ZDNet: “Four versions of Linux have become more capable operating systems than the
lowest-ranked version of Unix, according to a new study. An analysis by D.H. Brown Associates ranked SuSE’s Version 7.2 at the top of the heap, with a
“good” rating. Red Hat 7.1 was a notch behind, but still earning a “good.” Caldera International’s
OpenLinux 3.1 and Turbolinux Server 6.5 managed only “above average,” but still ranked better
than Caldera’s UnixWare, the study found.”

Microsoft stands by IIS, despite Gartner recommendations

Author: JT Smith

Responding to a Gartner recommendation that IIS users hit by the Nimda and Code Red worm should seek out alternative software solutions, a Microsoft spokesman said: “The Gartner recommendation overlooks the
fact that security is an industry wide
challenge and that serious vulnerabilities
have been found in all Web server products
and platforms. It is a folly to believe that if you switched from one product to another, you are protected.” Full story at CNN.

Red Hat move rekindles real-time Linux debate

Author: JT Smith

It’s back, reports EE Times, referring to the debate over the best way to outfit Linux for real-time embedded purposes. Is it better to enhance the real-time features of the Linux kernel, as Monta Vista Software is doing, or should a separate real-time kernel be used, such as FSMLab’s RTLinux does? The latter may have a greater influence on the eventual outcome of the debate, now that Red Hat has decided to go with RTLinux as its standard for developing new embedded applications.

When operating systems advocates attack – duplicate

Author: JT Smith

Commentary from osOpinion: “With the advent of such destructive viruses as the Nimda worm, users of alternative operating systems have been boasting about how much more secure
their boxes are when compared to Microsoft’s Windows.

As if to say that their machines are somehow immune to virus attacks.

Despite uninformative comments suggesting otherwise, these virus outbreaks are not based on questions regarding Microsoft’s security (or lack thereof).”
Instead, it’s an issue of logistics.”
