CNET: “Companies are not doing as well as they did last year,” said Darryl Gordon, director of marketing

PoizonBOx hacks past security firm’s ‘honey pot’

Author: JT Smith

The Register: “New Zealand security firm Co-Logic has become one of the latest victims of prolific
hacking group PoizonBOx.

In order to monitor hacker activity the security assessment firm had set up a “honey
pot” server, a poorly protected section of its Web infrastructure that contained no
real data and was designed purely to log the activity of crackers.

However after hacking into this site, PoizonBOx was able to break into the firm’s
genuine systems, IDG reports. The defacement has been recorded by Alldas.de and
can be seen here.”

access to the service for nearly a week, the company says.

Though the company posted a notice on its Web site saying the instant messaging service would be back online by Friday, MSN

Real live trolling on the South Shore rail

Author: JT Smith

“If you really want to tell people how cool Linux is, don’t just sit there and spout off useless fanaticism. Explain to people
why open source and free software are beneficial to them. Talk in real numbers, real advantages. You can’t just spray
out silly comments like ‘Linux will kick Windows ass’ and expect people to respond positively. Anyone with half a brain
could come back with a just as stupid argument and point out to you that Linux has been around since 1991, just as long
as Windows, so why hasn’t it happened yet? It’s had 10 years to kick Windows’ ass, and it hasn’t in the desktop space.
What are you going to say to that? Are you going to say that Linux has not headed for that direction except in recent
years? Are you going to point out Linux’s very strong deployment in the server and embedded spaces? Or are you just
going to sit there and spew out mocking and hateful little comments trying to boost your own sense of superiority?” More at LinuxPlanet.com.

Microsoft remedy Redux

Author: JT Smith

Kelly McNeill writes “The Microsoft antitrust decision is still intact after the first appeal. What does this mean for the future of Microsoft’s “The Freedom to Innovate” theme? At first glance, the opinion handed down by the appeals court looks like a victory for Microsoft. e most important aspect to the appellate decision is that the trial court’s findings that Microsoft is a monopoly and abused its monopoly power have been upheld. What has been affected is the remedy. This does not mean that the remedy is set aside or reversed. What it means is that it must be reconsidered by another court. This reconsideration could go either way.”
