Author: JT Smith

Internet.com’s Browserwatch has a review of Konqueror/Embedded. “Konqueror/Embedded has no real Web site of its own to call home

Security advisory for execve/ptrace

Author: JT Smith

From LWN.net
: Linux kernels before 2.2.19 are vulnerable to a local root exploit.

This vulnerability exploits a race condition in the 2.2.x Linux kernel
within the execve() system call.

By predicting the child-process sleep() within execve(), an attacker
can use ptrace() or similar mechanisms to subvert control of the child
process. If the child process is setuid, the attacker can cause the
child process to execute arbitrary code at an elevated privilege.

Paying to use free software?

Author: JT Smith

A column at osOpinion talks about dealing with Microsoft’s licensing and compatibility with XP. “Linux companies and developers must get back to developing the desktop and desktop
applications. We need applications like Act 2000, Intuit’s Quicken and QuickBooks, and a way to run children’s
curriculum CD-ROMs and a real browser. With what appears to loom ahead, even Linux servers might shrink in
market share if they don’t provide services to XP.

While many applications and development tools exist in the Linux space, they do little good if 88 percent of the
desktops in the world can’t shake hands.”
