Lineo, Metrowerks ship CodeWarrior for Embedix Development System

Author: JT Smith

Lineo
Inc., a
leading innovator in embedded systems, real-time and high availability
solutions, and Metrowerks, makers of CodeWarrior, the best selling
Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for Linux, today announced the
shipment of the CodeWarrior for Embedix Development System for the
PowerQUICC II MPC8260.

The collaborative effort between Lineo and Metrowerks provides
developers
with the leading embedded Linux software development kit (Embedix 1.2)
and
the best selling IDE (CodeWarrior) combined with the Motorola MPC8260
development board. The system provides developers with a ready-to-run
solution to speed time to market for embedded devices that incorporate
the
MPC8260 and is being shown this week at the Embedded Systems Conference
(Lineo booth #1734, Metrowerks booth #1902).

The PowerQUICC II MPC8260 is a popular development board that is
commonly
used in devices for Internet infrastructure, telecommunications and
networking markets. Lineo and Metrowerks also have work under way to
provide
nearly a dozen other such development systems for other Motorola
development
boards. The development systems provide developers with an advantage
because
they come pre-configured with such things as pre-flashed memory so less
time
is spent on assembling the development environment and more time can be
used
on creating applications.

“The CodeWarrior for Embedix Development System is evidence of how
Lineo and
Metrowerks are making it easier for the developer,” said Tim Bird,
Chief
Technology Officer, Lineo, Inc. “Developers are interested in saving
time,
using the best tools available and increasing their speed to market
with
embedded devices-we’re providing all of that today with this product.”

The all-inclusive development system contains one MPC8260 processor
board,
pre-programmed with CodeWarrior for Embedix, the Embedix SDK and Target
Wizard, which helps to automate the development process. Using this
system,
developers can create applications on a Windows or Linux host platform.

“Metrowerks and Lineo are both dedicated to helping embedded developers
simplify the development process,” said John Smolucha, vice president
of
marketing, Metrowerks. “Together, we’re able to provide them with a
comprehensive package of hardware and software tools that will help
them
speed time to market while reducing cost and enabling flexibility.”

The CodeWarrior IDE provides intuitive, graphics-based tools that allow
developers to create, compile and debug their applications from a
single
environment, shortening the development cycle and helping them reach
market
faster.

Embedix SDK is a powerful solution for the simplified development of
embedded Linux technology that creates flexible and reliable embedded
software solutions while minimizing cost and reducing time-to-market
for
OEMs. The Embedix SDK Target Wizard is an easy-to-use, graphics-based
tool
that simplifies configuration of the Linux kernel and user space
components
for use on specific embedded target devices.

The PowerQUICC II MPC8260 is an advanced integrated communications
microprocessor available for the telecommunications and networking
markets.
It combines a high-speed embedded PowerPC core along with integration
of
networking and communications peripherals for high-end communications
systems.

In Sept. 2000, Motorola, Inc., Metrowerks’ parent company, acquired 3
million shares of Lineo, Inc. for the aggregate price of $22.5 million.
This
agreement established a strategic partnership between Lineo, Inc. and
Metrowerks.

Pricing and Availability
The CodeWarrior for Embedix Development System is sold for $14,495 and
may
be ordered through Metrowerks’ and Lineo’s extensive sales and
distribution
channels. Customers may contact Lineo at oemsales@lineo.com or by
