Public interest cited in DVD descrambler appeal

The Register reports that lawyers for the Web site 2600 are arguing that publishing the DeCSS DVD descrambling code is in the public interest. “This may be the most important challenge to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act
(DMCA) yet mounted, because 2600 didn’t make whole, copyrighted works
available, but rather made a utility program available which, while outlawed by the
DMCA on grounds that it enables evildoers to circumvent a technical access
control to copyrighted work, is also an item of journalistic interest.”

Bad economy’s good for Open Source, not for Linux companies

Survey: 23% of computer users will consider switch to Linux

LinuxPR has the information on a new survey: According to a recent TNS
EMNID survey, 56 percent of the interviewed PC users have heard of Linux and
ten percent already use the alternative operating system at home or at work.
This statistic indicates that, in terms of distribution, Linux is second to Windows.
Furthermore, 23 percent of the computer users consider switching to Linux
when upgrading their equipment. This information was obtained from a survey
recently conducted by the market research institute TNS EMNID,
Bielefeld/Germany.

Transmeta gets big boost from Microsoft tablet

Caldera Systems previews new company: Caldera International

At LinuxPR: Caldera Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:
CALD) today announced the debut of Caldera International, the name of the
new company after the completion of the acquisition of The Santa Cruz
Operation, Inc. (SCO) (Nasdaq: SCOC) Server Software and Professional
Services divisions by Caldera Systems, Inc. expected the second calendar
quarter.

As reflected in the Caldera mission statement, the new Caldera International will
focus on three distinct areas, “…to help all businesses and customers interested in
developing, deploying and managing Linux and unified UNIX platforms.” The

architecture with global sales, services, support and training to companies of any
