ScanSoft and Vividata to bring latest OCR technology to Linux market

From LinuxPR: ScanSoft, Inc. (Nasdaq: SSFT), a leader in

Unix and Linux imaging software company, to provide Vividata customers with
the latest in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology. The agreement

Ximian appoints Todd Miceli as CFO

Miceli has joined the company as its chief financial officer. At
Ximian, Miceli will be responsible for the company’s financial direction.

Previously, Miceli was vice president of finance and a founding
employee of e-Steel Corporation; vice president of business development and
strategic planning at GE Capital Mortgage Corporation; vice president of
the Corporate Finance Group at Jefferies & Company, Inc.; and principal
of the Investment Banking Group at Southcoast Capital Corporation.

Miceli received a B.S. in Finance from Bentley College and an M.B.A.
from the William E. Simon Graduate School of Administration at the
University of Rochester.

Lion worm roars at Linux servers

The ECommerce Times follows up on the Linux Lion worm. Security experts “noted the worm would not be near the threat that it is if systems administrators
would only update their systems. The vulnerability that the Lion worm is presently exploiting has been public knowledge since
the end of January, not long after the Ramen worm made headlines.”

2001 webmaster survey: Linux maximizes resources

Inter@ctive Week reports on its new webmaster survey by featuring a Linux user. ‘Another Web manager who’s had to maximize the capabilities of his existing infrastructure is
Chris Ellenburg, the Webmaster at WFMY News 2, the CBS affiliate television station in
Greensboro, N.C., owned by Gannett. Ellenburg single-handedly runs the station’s entire Web
operation; he’s a one-man band who is a combination Linux programmer, Web designer, network
engineer and all-around tech support guy. In short, he’s the classic definition of a Webmaster.”

ESR: Linux will be true Windows alternative by ’02

ComputerWorld has an interview with high-profile Open Source advocate Eric S. Raymond. Among his answers: “I think the Microsoft desktop monopoly will break due to operating system pricing issues before Linux is
really ready for the role of being a true alternative.

We’re nine months away from the polish for that role. What’s still needed is for Linux to be refined to
eliminate any remaining glitches that stall installations and leave users unsure of how to proceed. That’s the
kind of stuff that needs to get fixed. There are people with incentives to do that now. The companies
making Linux distributions hire people to do it.”

HP Linux InkJet Project releases drivers

From Linux Today: “Hewlett-Packard has released drivers for over 30 of their inkjet printers. The drivers themselves are provided under a mixture of licenses, ranging from GPL for GNU-licensed Ghostscript additions, the GNU Lesser GPL (LGPL) for the glue code, and a BSD license with an “HP product only” clause for the HP Inkjet Server software.”

First LEON silicon tested successfully

From Slashdot: “LEON, the open-source CPU developed for the European Space Agency, has been successfully manufactured and tested by Atmel on an Atmel ATC35. Gaisler Research, whose CEO Jiri Gaisler wrote the VHDL model of LEON, also offers a real time kernel, simulator, a cross-compiler, etc. for this SPARC-family processor designed for space applications.”
