How OPNFV and ETSI NFV are Advancing NFV Adoption

ETSI was the birthplace of the NFV concept in 2012, and OPNFV was launched just two years later with many of the same members to help bring NFV from specs to reality using open source methodologies. Marc Cohn, who is an active participant in many open communities including OPNFV, OpenDaylight and the Open Networking Foundation, recently published an article for SDxCentral about how OPNFV and ETSI continue to work in tandem to accelerate NFV adoption.

He says, “OPNFV and ETSI NFV ISG share many common members, providing continuity and collaboration across the NFV specification and implementation activities. Both the ETSI NFV ISG and OPNFV senior leadership teams are aligned on their common mission—to stimulate a vibrant open ecosystem to ultimately drive adoption for NFV. And what we’ve seen is that instead of specifications solely driving implementation, the OPNFV reference platform will help drive the requirements, which in term will drive evolution of the reference platform.”

He goes on to discuss where the two initiatives complement each other and what we can expect to see in the long-term. Read the full article here: ‘WE’ is ‘Us’: How OPNFV and ETSI NFV are collaborating to accelerate NFV adoption.

SC Congress: Use Linux to Fight Malware, and Let Business Learn Security-Speak

With over 30 sessions in two days there was a lot to cover at this year’s SC Congress conference in Toronto. Here are a few highlights I couldn’t squeeze into other stories:

Dump Windows where needed

–Worried about the vulnerability of workstations used by several thousand IBM system administrators who had access to clients’ production systems, about four years ago the company took away their Windows computers and put them all on Linux PCs.

Chromixium: A new Linux Distro with a Chrome OS Twist

I already know what you’re asking… why do we need a Chrome OS knock-off when we already have the real deal (and the real deal is dirt cheap)?

The answer to that question is two fold: 1) Because it can be done; and 2) Because you probably have plenty of older hardware sitting around that could easily power a Chrome OS-like operating system.

Recently, I had to reinstall the primary OS on my production machine. I opted to try something different than Ubuntu, so I started looking around at new distributions. In the end, the decision came down to two distributions:

Google Explains How it Will Make Chrome Suck Less Battery

For all its popularity, Chrome can still be an irritating browser to use — soaking up processing power and draining battery life. And while these issues are true on any platform, they seem particularly acute on Macs, especially when compared to Apple’s native Safari browser. Google isn’t blind to these issues, though, and is keen to catch up, with senior Chrome engineer Peter Kasting this week explaining several recent tweaks to the browser aimed at improving performance.

“Expect us to continually improve in this area.”

In a post on Google+, Kasting outlines a number of under-the-hood adjustments that should be making their way to regular users soon, including changing how Chrome renders pages to prioritize foreground tabs over…

The Pro Version of Nvidia’s 4K Android TV Box is Now Shipping

The Shield Pro, Nvidia’s gaming console and 4K streaming box, is now shipping. If you want to be an early adopter of the nascent Android TV platform, this is one of your only options, and it’s certainly the cheapest. Sharp and Sony currently have the only Android TV-powered sets on store shelves, and while you can get it on Google’s $79 Nexus Player set-top box, that device doesn’t support 4K.

The Shield Pro is the stronger sibling of the $199 Shield. A powerful, portable console with 500GB of storage, it’s packed with Nvidia’s Tegra X1 — the mobile “superchip” unveiled at CES — and 3GB of RAM. All that makes the Shield Pro twice as powerful as an Xbox 360 with half the power output. Users can stream games with the Nvidia GRID, a…

Dell’s Ubuntu-Powered IoT Gateway Can Run a Smart Building

Dell launched just a few days ago an IoT Gateway powered by Ubuntu Core, and it looks like it’s already being tested to demonstrate how it can be used to run the smart buildings of the future.

The Internet of Things is a relatively new concept that explains the fact the many of the things that surround us are actually connected to the Internet and can be governed in a centralized manner. Michael Dell, the founder of Dell, says that IoT is a trillion dollar market, so it’s n… (read more)

Ubuntu Touch to Get Full Screen Rotation Soon

Ubuntu developers are preparing to release a new update for the Ubuntu Touch platform, but they are also thinking about the update that will come after this one, and it looks like full shell rotation is finally coming.

Some of the Ubuntu Touch users might have noticed that full shell rotation is not one of the features, but it looks that it was high enough on the list of requests to finally get some attention from the developers. Before you get too excited, you need to know… (read more)
