As Firefox OS Phones Loom, Mozilla Won’t Dabble on the Hardware Side

 

Mozilla has been involved with open source for a very long time now, and as more details emerge about how the company will approach its promising Firefox OS mobile strategy, it’s clear that it is applying some lessons learned from the open source game.

In a series of new reports, there are signs that Mozilla will concentrate on development of its mobile operating system and leave it to hardware makers to make Firefox OS phones successful. It’s a page taken out of Google’s early Android strategy and it could redefine Mozilla’s fortunes forever.

Looking at the Timeline for 100 Petaflops

Over at The Register, Timothy Prickett Morgan looks at when we might see a 100 Petaflop machine on the TOP500 list.

Berkeley Lab is aiming for 100 petaflops with its NERSC-8 box, which three years ago was tentatively scheduled for 2017 or so with a strong possibility of an earlier delivery. In the latest NERSC roadmap embedded in the RFP from last November, that schedule was moved up to late 2015 or early 2016. Vendors are expected to be selected in the third or fourth quarter of this year, and it is highly likely it will be a Cray Cascade with future Intel processors and future Nvidia or Intel coprocessors.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Hands-On: The Smartphone That Evolved Into a Tablet

Sony’s Xperia Z Ultra represents a great evolution of the original Xperia Z design: it’s now waterproof instead of just water-resistant, its 3.5mm headphone jack is no longer hidden behind an annoying plastic flap, and it has an aluminum frame and softer edges. It’s also thinner, at 6.5mm versus 7.9mm on the Z, and it has a Triluminous display. The only problem with the Z Ultra? It’s not actually a phone, it’s a tablet that you can sidetalk with.
