This Wink Doesn’t Come With a Smile

Linux software reviews Wink, a software package for creating tutorial and presentation screen shots, works reasonably well when it works at all. However, getting it to run may not be worth the bother, given the better alternatives available. Wink’s premise is a good one for anyone who needs to create a show-and-explain presentation on how to do things with a computer. Wink lets successful users capture screen shots of the actions they take on the desktop, wrap them into an animation, and export them as Flash, PDF or executable files for handy playback.

Piston Cloud Gets $8 Million of Funding from OpenStack-friendly Partners

Piston cloudSlowly but surely, Piston Cloud has gained a reputation as a company strategizing around the OpenStack open cloud computing platform and how it can serve enterprises. And now, the company has announced that it has raised $8 million in Series B financing following a $4.5 million Series A round in July 2011.

Notably, Cisco–a high-profile OpenStack backer–has joined a group of investors committing the funds. “The investment will be used to fuel product development, meet the needs of Piston Cloud’s rapidly expanding customer base and further deliver on the company’s vision for mass adoption of OpenStack,” Piston Cloud officials announced.

Cisco Systems Inc., Data Collective and Swisscom Ventures join Divergent Ventures, Hummer Winblad and True Ventures as principal investors in the latest round of funding.

Fedora 18 for ARM Released

The wait for a Fedora 18 build for ARM systems is over. “The Fedora 18 for ARM release includes pre-built images for Versatile Express (QEMU), Trimslice (Tegra), Pandaboard (OMAP4), GuruPlug (Kirkwood), and Beagleboard (OMAP3) hardware platforms. Fedora 18 for ARM also includes an installation tree in the yum repository which may be used to PXE-boot a kickstart-based installation on systems that support this option, such as the Calxeda EnergyCore (HighBank).” See the release announcement for more information.
