Tracking Down High IO Wait in Linux

NetworkOperationsTracking down performance issues in large distributed systems is inherently complicated. Why is the application slow? Where is the bottleneck? In my experience, one of the more insidious culprits is known as high IO wait. A place where, in the words of Dr. Seuss, everyone is just waiting.

The first indication of a high IO wait issue is normally system load average. The load average is computed based on CPU utilization, and includes the number of processes using or waiting to use the CPU, and, importantly on Linux, process that are in uninterruptible sleep. The load average can be interpreted on a basic level as being a CPU core at full utilization has a system load average of one. So, for a quad-core machine, a system load average of 4 would mean that the machine had adequate resources to handle the work it needed to do, but just barely. On the same quad-core system, a load average of eight would mean that if the server had eight cores instead of four, it would have been able to handle the work, but it is now overloaded. Maybe.

32-bit Support in Linux Mint 14 RC 64-bit

Description of the problem

It is not possible to install Skype, Google Earth or any 32-bit application in Linux Mint 14 RC 64-bit.

Cause of the problem

The ability to install 32-bit applications in a 64-bit environment is commonly referred to as “Multiarch”.

An upstream change occurred in Debian’s dpkg which made the Multiarch configuration in Ubuntu obsolete. That configuration was removed and Ubuntu 12.10 consequently released with Multiarch disabled by default.

The problem wasn’t detected during QA and impacts the two 64-bit editions of Linux Mint 14 RC.

CloudStack: Filling Two Niches Open Source Enterprise Cloud Management

If you look at the cloud computing sector, you might think, based on the hype, that enterprise-cloud management systems like OpenStack, OpenNebula or Eucalyptus may have things wrapped up. But to ignore CloudStack’s entry in this horserace is to do so at your own peril, because this is a product that deserves a solid look by any IT organization ready to move into the cloud.

All of these products belong to a class of software known as enterprise cloud management, and they are what large companies use to create a hybrid or private cloud environment. They are all – importantly – also open source. That matters because virtualization giant VMware wants to play in this space, too, with its own proprietary solutions. More on that later.

CloudStack’s readiness was demonstrated quite clearly earlier this week with the release of Apache CloudStack 4.0.0-incubating, a rather unfortunate name that undercuts the serious maturity of this cloud orchestration platform and its capability to be a big star on this increasingly crowded stage.
