openSUSE Connect hacking session at FrOSCon 2010

The openSUSE Boosters team is preparing for their presence at FrOSCon, which will be held on 21st and 22nd of August 2010 in Sankt Augustin near Bonn, Germany.

This time we will not be in charge of the openSUSE booth (which will be organized by the community), but we’ll be driving an openSUSE Connect hacking session or “Hackmeck” if you want. I prepared a short Q&A to give you more info about it.

  • Q: What is openSUSE Connect?
  • A: Connect aims to be a central point of openSUSE project, it will handle users, group memberships, elections, events, etc. In short, it will replace users.opensuse.org and introduce social aspects to the application. Other parts of the infrastructure can query Connect for information via API, so it will become the umbrella of the project.
  • Q: What is it based on?
  • A: It uses Elgg – an open-source social networking platform.
  • Q: I remember a site running on connect.opensuse.org. What has happened to it?
  • A: Yes, that was our proof of concept application running on Tog platform. Unfortunately it turned out that upstream developers have other projects on their plate leaving Tog development inactive. Also there were lots of important features missing which we found already done in Elgg. URL connect.opensuse.org now redirects to the Connect wiki page.
  • Q: How can I join the hacking session?
  • A: Fill in this form so we can plan the event better. Then come to FrOSCon and find us!
  • Q: What do I need to know?
  • A: Elgg is written in PHP and uses MySQL database. Knowledge of these technologies is very good, but not essential. If you want to be really prepared, read the Elgg documentation and/or install Elgg on your own machine to see how it works, what is the usage of the plugins and so on. You can also try some of the plugins mentioned in the wiki or from the Elgg plugin directory.
  • Q: What do I have to bring?
  • A: We will bring our own server and network infrastructure for development but you need to bring your own laptop to participate.

We are looking forward to seeing you there! If there are any questions that are left unanswered just drop me an email or ask in comments …

Btrfs Did Regress Hard In The Linux 2.6.35 Kernel

This morning we published benchmarks of ZFS, EXT4, and Btrfs when running these three popular file-systems off a high-performance OCZ Vertex 2 solid-state drive and also a 7200RPM notebook hard drive. To a fair amount of surprise, the EXT4 file-system ended up beating out Btrfs on the SSD in a number of tests, which was a change from our tests when using the EXT4/Btrfs modules on previous kernels. It was even more surprising since Btrfs has an SSD-optimized mode where as EXT4 does not. However, it turns out this is part of a major performance regression for this file-system in the Linux 2.6.35 kernel…

X.Org Server 1.9 Is Hitting Ubuntu 10.10 Soon

Ubuntu’s Christopher James Halse Rogers has just issued a notice that X.Org Server 1.9 is soon going to be uploaded to the Ubuntu Maverick repository for Ubuntu 10.10, which is part of Ubuntu’s X and Mesa plans. X.Org Server 1.9 isn’t going to be officially released until later this month, but the Ubuntu 10.10 feature freeze is coming up this week so the existing X.Org Server 1.8.2 release is being replaced with an X.Org Server 1.9 snapshot until the final release is made available…

HTC’s 4.3-inch Desire HD shows up on video

We saw our first images of the Desire HD over the weekend, and just as day follows night, video leaks typically follow pictorial ones. You’ll already be familiar with the mooted specs — including 720p HD video recording, WVGA screen resolution, and an 8 megapixel imager — so what else does this handset tour reveal? Well, the family resemblance to HTC’s other 4.3-inchers is inevitably apparent to see, with the Desire HD sticking its headphone port at the bottom just like the HD2, and employing a dual LED flash à la the EVO 4G. Beyond that, it looks like yet another well rounded device from the prolific Taiwanese phone maker — hurry past the break to see it for yourself.
